Which life skill to master?

10 life skills identified by WHO

Life skills are skills that help an individual to live an independent, productive and a fruitful life. They play a very important role in the overall personality development of an individual.

They are the pillars of our living. The ten most crucial skills that everyone should master are listed by the WHO. The first five skills are as follows:

  • Self awareness

Knowing oneself refers to being aware of one’s ideas, feelings, preferences, strengths, and weaknesses. Developing self awareness improves our understanding of who we are, our strengths, and our areas for growth, which aids in decision-making and helps us avoid mistakes.

  • Communication

A crucial life skill, communication is important in both our personal and professional lives. It is the ability to express your thoughts, feelings, opinions, and emotions clearly. Effective communication includes both conveying the information and active listening. In addition to reducing conflicts and strengthening relationships, effective communication also increases self-esteem and decision-making abilities.

  • Decision making

Everyone has probably been in a position where they had to make a decision between two options. Decision-making abilities become crucial in this situation. It is the capacity to make wise decisions while taking into account all the advantages and disadvantages. Here, avoiding potential problems is the main objective. By improving our decision-making abilities, we become more self-reliant, get a sense of responsibility, and gain confidence.

  • Critical thinking

The ability of fact analysis and logical decision-making is known as critical thinking. Thinking critically teaches us to consider all sides of a matter before making an informed decision. Critical thinking fosters creativity and curiosity and encourages “out of the box” thinking. Also, it helps to strengthen problem-solving skills and decision-making.

  • Resilience

Resilience is one’s ability to bounce back from challenging life events. It is the capacity to cope with the difficulties, issues, and setbacks we encounter. It gives you a sense of control. You become more positive and optimistic as a result.
