Global Awareness: Being a citizen of the world

Global Awareness: Being a citizen of the world

The world that we live in today is a beautiful place with millions of opportunities and resources to create something unique. People are given the freedom to express themselves in whichever way they feel like, which has opened the Pandora’s Box of our world to new learnings and new challenges. Someone, somewhere is making a new scientific invention, new technological innovation or even a new film which can completely change our perspective towards the world. Or maybe it has already been invented and we are completely unaware about it. Think about how much we are missing out on and

how much we can gain if we make it a habit to know more about the world that we live in.

Global awareness is the ability that incorporates the attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary for a person to competently and perceptively navigate the challenges and opportunities of the world that we live in which aims to ultimately promote betterment and development.

How can global awareness be incorporated for school students? – Building curiosity about various parts of the world.

Teachers play a very important role in the overall development of the child. If the teacher incorporates new ideas, new languages, new cuisines in the classroom through various activities then the students are exposed to the world at a very young age. Teachers can narrate stories and show videos about various cultures which will give birth to curiosity about knowing the world in the minds of the students.

  • Providing them resources to gain more world knowledge:

The students at a young age need resources which are not only knowledgeable but also full of curiosity and innovation. Students can learn more about the society they live in by reading stories about various famous personalities, listening to various kinds of music, travelling to various museums and galleries displaying various cultures, making food items of various cuisines. All these activities are fun and innovative but they contribute to global learning in a gigantic way.

  • Inculcating a sense of respect and empathy:

It is important that the students are taught to respect the diversity existing in our beautiful world and that they show an attitude of tolerance and empathy towards all. This sense of respect and kindness will be developed when they watch their parents, teachers and people in the immediate surroundings being empathetic and kind. So, it is our responsibility to be kind and thoughtful which will be replicated in the way our children view the world.

The world today is large, but it can be made smaller and kinder if students are taught at a young age about various backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures and

varied ideas. ‘Global Awareness’ is an opportunity to make the students understand how much the world and its diversity can help them grow and also appreciate how much they are contributing and impacting the lives of people around the globe.
